The USPGA Championship is run by the Professonal Golfers' Association of America, which was formed in 1916. Rodman Wanamaker, a department store magnate from Philadelphia, held a lunch at the Taplow Club in New York City on January 17th of that year, when he told a group of golf professionals that they should form their own organisation.
Three months later, having agreed on a constitution, the PGA of America was born. On October 1916, Wanamaker donated a prize fund of $2580 (and trophy) to be contested at the first USPGA Championship, which started with just 35 charter members, all from the New York area, continues to look after the interests of America's club professionals. Today its membership exceeds 23000 nationwide. The PGA has its headquarters at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
